Wolf is a points bet game that can be played alongside your individual stroke play round. Wolf can be played by 4 or 5 players but works best with 5 players when abilities are mixed. The following rules and scoring system are for the 5-player version.
The game is played as a round-robin, so the tee-off order must be decided before the round commences, and this tee-off order rotates by 1 person on each hole.
For example, on hole number 1, the tee-off order would be 1-2-3-4-5. On hole 2, the tee-off order would be 2-3-4-5-1and so on. This order continues in rotation until the end of hole 15.
The lowest net score wins the hole.
Players need to agree the value of each point at the start of the game. Rp20.000 per point normally works well.
THE GAME
The first player to tee off on each hole is the ‘Wolf’.
The Wolf then has a choice – if he has hit a great tee shot, or is on the green on a par 3, he may decide to play the hole as ‘Lone Wolf’ which means he is playing alone against the other 4 players. He must declare that he is playing Lone Wolf BEFORE the next tee shot is taken.
NB: Each player must play at least once as ‘Lone Wolf’ during the game.
Alternatively, if he doesn’t hit a great tee shot, the wolf can wait to see the next player’s tee shot. After each player tees off in the agreed sequence, the Wolf can decide to team up with that player. The Wolf must decide which player they team up with BEFORE the subsequent player in the sequence takes their turn.
They cannot wait to see all tee shots and then decide. Once a partner is chosen, the wolf cannot change their mind, no matter how good a subsequent player’s tee shot might be. The Wolf and his chosen partner then play the hole as 2-against-3.
Lastly, if no partner is chosen after seeing all 4 other players’ tee shots, the Wolf can choose to play alone as a ‘Back Door Wolf’. NB: Back Door Wolf does NOT count as a Lone Wolf!
SCORING
2-against-3 – if the Wolf and his chosen partner win the hole, both players earn 3 points each, while the losing 3 players each have 2 points deducted from their score. If the Wolf and his partner lose the hole, they each have 3 points deducted, while the other 3 players each earn 2 points.
Lone Wolf/Back Door Wolf – if the Wolf wins the hole after calling Lone Wolf, he earns 8 points. The other 4 players all have 2 points deducted fro their scores. If the wolf LOSES the hole after calling Lone Wolf, he will be deducted 8 points, and the 4 other players will each earn 2 points.
If the hole is tied, no points are scored and the previous score is carried over to the next hole.
DOUBLING THE BET
Super Wolf can be called by a Wolf on any of their tee-shots. Super Wolf must be called BEFORE the Wolf takes their tee-shot. This is a high-risk strategy, but double points are available if the Wolf wins the hole…
A Wolf winning a hole after calling Super Wolf would earn 16 points. The other 4 players would each lose 4 points. However, a Wolf losing the hole after calling Super Wolf would LOSE 16 points, and the other players would all earn 4 points each.
THE LAST 3 HOLES
The Wolf for the final 3 holes will be the player with the lowest points score after 15 holes. He will have a chance to improve his position by playing either as Lone Wolf, Super Wolf or as a 2-against-3 team for the final 3 holes. The same rules apply for choosing partners or calling Lone/Super Wolf as for the first 15 holes, and the same scoring system applies.
HOW THE FINAL SCORES WORK
Each player owes the points difference to all players above them. For example:
Player 1 has 18pts
Player 2 has 10pts
Player 3 has 25pts
Player 4 has 12pts
Player 5 has 24pts
Player 2 has the least points. Player 2 owes player 1 Rp160.000 (8 x 20.000), player 3 Rp300.000 (15 x 20.000), player 4 Rp40.000 (2 x 20.000) and player 5 Rp280.000 (14 x 20.000).
Player 4 has the next least points. He will owe players 1, 3 and 5.
Player 1 came third, he owes players 3 and 5.
Player 5 came second. He owes the winner only, player 3.
The winner pays the bar bill….!
