Green Jacket Local Rules

2023 RULES CHANGES, CLARIFICATION OF PENALTY RULES AND LOCAL RULES USED FOR GREEN JACKET COMPETITION

  1. Ball Out of Bounds/Lost Ball

Players have the following options if the ball is, or is virtually certain to be out of bounds (behind the boundaries marked in WHITE), or if the ball is lost within the general area of the course:

  1. For one penalty stroke, the player can take stroke and distance relief, where the player takes another stroke from the same position as the previous stroke according to Rule 18.1 For example, if your tee shot goes out of bounds, your next stroke taken from that same tee box would be your THIRD stroke
  2. For two penalty strokes, the player can drop a ball on the fairway edge where the ball crossed the boundary, but no closer to the hole, according to Local Rule E-5 For example, if your tee shot goes out of bounds, and you choose to play your next stroke from the fairway edge where the ball crossed the boundary, this would be your FOURTH stroke.

Same options and penalties apply for hitting out of bounds from anywhere on the course, not just for tee shots.

Ball in Penalty Area

For one penalty stroke, players have the following options of relief if the ball is in a penalty area (areas normally marked by either RED or YELLOW boundary, for instance a body of water):

  1. Stroke and Distance relief, where the player takes another stroke from the same position as the previous stroke (Red and Yellow Penalty Areas)
  2. Back-on-the-Line relief (Red & Yellow Penalty Areas), where the player can drop a ball on the line as described in Rule 17.1
  3. Lateral Relief (Red Penalty Areas ONLY) where the player can drop a ball on the line as described in Rule 17.1

For example, if your SECOND stroke enters a penalty area, and you take one of the above relief options that incurs one penalty stroke, your next stroke from the relief area with be your FOURTH stroke. Please note that from 2023 there is a minor update to the Back-on-the-Line relief option, that allows the dropped ball to move forwards towards the hole within the relief area. Previously the ball was not allowed to move forwards towards the hole when dropped.

If there is a drop zone provided (i.e. on a par 3 with water hazard), this can be used as alternative relief area to the 3 above options.

Cleaning Ball

In any part of the general area of all holes, if mud is stuck to the ball, the player can mark, lift clean and replace the ball in the same position without penalty.
